Review Purchased this truck with 103xxx miles miles in Nov 2011 for $1600, it now has 124xxx. It ran great except for the tranny, it would jerk forward when shifting from 1st to 2nd and shift late from 2nd to 3rd. However, I bought it knowing full well of the tranny problems, wasnt that bad. The truck ran excellent for the first 4k-5k miles, then it left me stranded due to a bad ignition coil. 2k miles later truck wouldnt start due to a bad fuel pump. But its to be expected from a 20+ year old vehicle. Very weak rear suspension.
Ive had to change all of the following parts: Best Features Ignition coil Map sensor- EGR valve- IAC valve Cluster Radiator Fuel pump Idler arm Pitman arms Upper coolant hose 2 x thermostats Intake manifold gasket Master cylinder 4 rear shock absorbers Exhaust flange gasket Water pump 3 rear shocks leaf springs muffler 2x Ive spent a total of 4 grand in repairs and parts. I think today is the day I cut my loses. The truck is currently in the shop for a new water pump.
Yesterday I changed the intake manifold gasket and radiator. I feel bad because I really like it, its my first truck. Favorite features are: very strong engine, body style 5 stars, interior space; seats 3 comfortably. Worst Features I have nothing against GM/Chevy.
I think they have manufactured a great product. I think the truck is pretty reliable. A reason for all the break downs could very well be due to its age. I also used the truck as my scrap truck; I always overloaded.
She works all day non stop. I might upgrade to a heavy duty 2500 or a 5.4 f250 super duty. I've heard good things about those trucks. I'd definitely recommend this truck to anyone who is looking a for a daily driver or for light duty use only.
Review Ive had trucks before but this chevy is the best beast I've ever owned. I have the 5.7l and auto transmission. If you have a crude understanding of basic maintenance, you can keep this truck running forever. If not, when it does break the parts are the cheapest I've ever seen in a truck.
Even the motor can be had for under a grand. The body has no rust the frame has surface rust I regularly sand and repaint.

Its a shame they don't make them like this anymore. Best Features -The engine is a powerful -The torque is perfect in every gear -Exterior is all metal including bumpers body frame.Frame is built solid -Handles quite well for a truck -Easy to steer despite its size -Comfortable front seating can easily accomidate two 6'5' sized people Worst Features Center console needs a better securing system plastic bolt points tend to break making the console able to move around Back seats will seat midgets or children anything over 5'5' is going to have a difficult time sitting in the back. Review This truck has been in My family for at least 8 years, we got it when it had around 200k on it. We had to rebuild the 5.7L v8 only because the frosh plug fell out and it burned up. It now has 460k on it body, and interior is still decent, and besides regular maintenance, like shocks, starters, breaks and oil changes this truck has been the most reliable truck i've seen. PS minus 40 degrees Celsius, still starts without being plugged in.
Like a rock Best Features good engine, doesn't rob you on gas, great body style. Worst Features none i could think of. Bring em back?, remake em some new technology in it would be nice but keep the main parts the same.
Review bought this truck used in 1996 with 56k miles on it. Have 283,000 on it now. No major problems. Had to replace the transmission at about 180,000 miles, though this was my fault thinking I could pull a heavy trailer in OD on flat run. Replaced transmission and have had no other problems.
Just replaced stereo speakers last week, all had gone out. Have put 2 A/C compressors and that is about it. Use Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic oil and change oil every 10,000 miles, filter every 5k. Uses 1/2 quart in 5k. Lab manual for electronic devices answer manual. Still pulls trailer great with 350 engine. Get about 16.5-18 mpg in town, can get as much as 22.5 on hwy.
Clear coat starting to peel, but will keep this truck till it dies, and then some. Best Features Good puller. Fairly comfortable on a trip. Just an all around great truck. Worst Features Better sound system, though today's units are there.
Andrew answered 2 years ago 700r would be the easiest. Your computer will be fine to run with it. You just need the kick down cable from a earlier truck that came with one (1992 and back).
That and jump your clutch so you can still start the truck without a clutch pedal. Driveshafts will be different. Make sure you get a 700r with provisions for a speed sensor and not a speedo cable. I will say this, there are alot of guys that would love a z71 with a manual. If you do some digging you could probably find a guy to trade with that has what you want.
